I'm looking into buying a domain name and building a web site. Do you
have tips as to where to point me? I've heard that Go Daddy and Yahoo are possibilities.

Thanks!

There's two parts to shop for, the registry and the hosting.

GoDaddy used to be the cheapest way to go for registry. But now they're not, and they have become pretty dubious. They have the most annoying interface and they constantly pitch you with up-sells.

I use, and highly recommend, DreamHost for both domain registry and hosting. They are honest and cheap. I've used them since 2002.

Domain name registry is under-$10 per year everywhere. The difference is in the extra privacy protection DreamHost (and some others but not godaddy) offer. DreamHost offers one FREE domain name registry per year with any hosting plan.

Hosting varies a lot. I recently switched my DreamHost plan to a cheaper variation. They now offer:

$9.95/mo for 1 year, $8.95/mo for 2 years, $7.95/mo for 3 years, or $6.95/mo for 5 years.

Or, pay $10.95/mo monthly with no year-long commitment. BUT, then there is $49.95 one-time set up fee. don't do that.

Since hosting includes one domain name, that's all you'll pay. Here's the link to the long list of features:

So yeah, that's what you should do!
